Complicit universities

Israeli universities not only have an exceptionally close relationship with the Israeli military and arms industry, but also play a key role in planning, implementing and justifying Israel’s regime of occupation and apartheid.

This list is not exhaustive

Research collaboration often takes place on departmental or faculty level, so there is currently no central catalogue of research collaborations. We are continuously working on mapping institutional agreements with complicit Israeli universities. If you know of any exchange agreements, research projects or other forms of collaborations at your own department, you can report it here. You can also contact your head of department or your dean and inquire about research collaborations.

Collaborations with Danish universities

  • Holds courses at an Israeli military base considered an extension of the university

  • Called for, and obtained, the resignation of Professor Ilan Pappé for supporting academic boycott

Tel Aviv University

  • Home to Institute for National Security Studies, which developed the so-called “Dahiya Doctrine,” involving the disproportionate use of force and the systematic targeting of civilian infrastructure.
  • Collaborates closely with Israel’s largest arms manufacurer, Elbit Systems
  • Runs a joint research center with the Israeli Air Forces aimed at developing “operational concepts, combat doctrines, and power- building processes.”
  • The academic reserve program in the law department trains lawyers for the Military Advocate General, which engages in whitewashing Israel’s war crimes and provides legal justification for the targeting of civilians.
  • TAU sits on stolen Palestinian land, on the site of the village of Al-Shaykh Muwannis, which was destroyed in the Nakba in 1948. The last remaining building of the village has been taken over by TAU as the faculty club building.
  • The university is playing host to a program named “Erez” in collaboration with the Israeli army, designed to allow those training to become officers to complete a full bachelor’s degree even before completing their course, and aiming to turn them into “combat officers and well-educated academics.”

Technion

  • Collaborates closely with some of Israel’s largest weapons manufacturers including Elbit Systems
  • Runs a course ‘Defense Strategy for International Markets’ as of 2017, which trains students in promotion of the international trade of Israeli arms.
  • According to Israeli historian Ilan Pappé, The Technion was complicit in ethnic cleansing in the Galilee, a north-central region of Israel largely populated by Palestinians.  Leading academics from The Technion prepared a plan, publicized in 2003, which stated that the Jewish ‘takeover’ of the Galilee was a national priority.  Their prospectus began by saying: “It is either them or us.  The land problems in the Galilee proved that any territory not taken by Zionist elements is going to be coveted by non-Zionists” [Ilan Pappé, The Forgotten Palestinians: A History of the Palestinians in Israel (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2011), p. 257].  A 1993 United Nations Commission defined ethnic cleansing as “the planned deliberate removal from a specific territory, persons of a particular ethnic group, by force or intimidation, in order to render that area ethnically homogenous”, and it is considered a crime against humanity under the statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC)
  • Technion helped to develop D9 remote-controlled bulldozer
  • The scream
  • Drones
    • As part of the Technion Autonomous Systems Program (TASP), students at The Technion developed the “Stealth drone” which can fly up to 1850 miles and carry two 1100-pound “smart bombs.”
    • TASP also developed the “Dragonfly” drone whose 9-inch wing span makes it small enough to “easily enter rooms through small windows and to send back photos from a miniature camera” according to the American Technion Society’s website
  • Rafael Advanced Defense Systems
  • The Technion is a sponsor of the Psagot “academic reserve” program

DTU

Hebrew University of Jerusalem

  • Has publicly promoted its provision of ‘diverse logistics equipment to several military units’ since the invasion of Gaza began.
